Thai Wok Takeaway, Kennack Sands

Ruan Minor, Helston TR12 7LT

Small but mighty, this little takeaway truck of wonder is taking Ruan Minor by storm with their epic Thai cuisine! Just up the road from the magnificent Kennack Sands beach, a charming Thai takeaway truck opens its hatch from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up their delicacies to the locals and holiday makers enjoying the picturesque coast line down South.

We took the opportunity to try out this curious truck on a beaming July day… After a long, hot day on the beach, I wondered how the fun-size restaurant on wheels might satisfy my great hunger. But boy did it satisfy! Our meals were immense, and with sweeping views over the rugged coast line from our chosen takeaway spot, I was delighted with the evening’s foodie find!

With a menu supplying all your favourite Thai dishes for outrageously awesome prices, you’d almost think it was too good to be true! But these lovely ladies really are offering up super quick service, and all with a gorgeous smile.

With starters, mains and sides all available, we felt spoilt for choice, and eventually settled on the crispy spring rolls and prawn crackers to begin. I just love the tapas style starters up for grabs when enjoying some Thai cuisine, and the Thai Wok did not let me down with their offerings.

Without a doubt, these little warm pockets of joy started our meal off perfectly. With each mouthful delicately coated in the smooth sweet chilli dip, they were gone in a flash. Crispy indeed, the 6 mini spring rolls were entirely fresh and filled with vermicelli, carrots, cabbage and noodles.

It must be said, the sweet chilli dip was good enough to drink, and even tasted good with a slight glaze on the prawn crackers!! (Might sound bonkers, but definitely worth a taster).

Quintessentially Thai, I can never pass on a good Pad Thai. Done right, this sweet and salty dish never lets me down. Offering four different options to appeal to every pallet,  the Thai Wok Pad Thai starts from as low as 6 pounds! I opted for the tiger prawn Pad Thai with noodles, spring onions, carrots and peanuts. Savouring every last bite of the succulent and tasty dish, I was certainly impressed. With hints of spicy goodness, the tasting notes within this tupperware were off the charts, leaving a beautiful, seasoned umami taste lingering on the tongue.

The second meal of the evening combined number 8 and number 13 on the menu. Tender and exquisite, the mixed meat, sweet and sour dish incorporated pork, chicken and tiger prawns, with onions and peppers in a juicy and fiery sauce. To sponge up the lush pool of sweet and sour sauce, the egg fried rice was, of course, the ideal companion. While this duo could be considered slightly heavy on the salt, the savoury richness of the rice, coupled with its light and fluffy texture, meant that it complemented each bite of the saucy sweet and sour excellently.

So for some good Thai and for some great views, head down Kennack way, and show some love for the Thai Wok takeaway!
