Location: Canteen, Porthtowan
Mount Pleasant Ecological Park, Chapel Hill, Porthtowan, Truro, TR4 8HL
If you’re spending some time around the majestic North Coast of Cornwall, it’s worth checking out some of the gems on offer when it comes to gourmet grub!! Located on the gorgeous eco park landscape, the Canteen in Porthtowan is a lush spot serving seasonal food and a great atmos for brekki, lunch and dinner!
With beautiful values that cater towards sustainability and healthy living, Canteen offers a menu that changes daily depending on what is available from their farm and local suppliers. Not to mention, the lovely location within the eco park, that provides divine views over Porthtowan and the Cornish hills beyond. You can catch the glittering sea on a sunshiny day too! The eco park itself is an epic community space that doubles as a venue for live music and camping – and Canteen is right in the heart of it all!!
Before we even get to the food, we must chat all things deli!! When you walk into Canteen, you don’t quite know where to look first – with warm colours and a rustic aesthetic, the place itself is a cozy and welcoming space to enjoy your meal. But more than this, the small little shopping section just screams all things lovely, and is pretty irresistible if you’re into your deli bits. While you’re up there, take a peak at the tantalising selection of baked goods at the counter… It’s the pastry selection of dreams, if you’re just after a quick pick me up.
Taking a seat on one of the cafe’s awesome communal tables, we hit the ground running with some coffee, which was smooth and delicious, and accompanied our brunch just perfectly!
While I’ve enjoyed a fair few shakshoukas, this saucy little number was so packed with herby flavours and doused in colour, I’d say it will be a tough one to top! Served with springy ciabatta bread, the Canteen’s vegan take on this Middle Eastern dish was sublime. With a broken egg style dressing, tahina and Canteen’s own Dukka garnish, the dish itself was beyond lush, and stood out with its aromatic flavour and slight crunchy texture.
Alongside, the shakshouka, we went for the Cowboy Beans, and were met with a hearty, smokey bowl of beany goodness. This comforting dish is accompanied by Canteen’s crusty ciabatta bread and a vegan garlic mayo dressing, while the mixed beans, that are simmered in spices, gave the dish its fiery flare. The Cowboy Beans were a filling and flavourful favourite, and defiantly one to try if you’re heading to Canteen!
So, if you’re sat reading this with eyes of longing, just like Winnie, grab the pooch and head over to Porthtowan for a gorgeous spot of brunch at Canteen. In fact, why not make a weekend out of it, and pitch up in the eco park campsite – a feel good weekend that’s good for the soul.
